The USL Championship today announced that New Mexico United goalkeeper Alex Tambakis has won the 2022 USL Championship Save of the Year. On May 14th, the Greek goalkeeper faced a diving header from Battery forward Aidan Apodaca. Tambakis swiftly maneuvered across the goal line, and deftly tipped the ball over the bar, finishing the move sprawled into his own net. That save maintained a clean sheet for United, earning them a 2-0 road win, and three crucial points in the playoff race.
Tambakis’ save was pitted against seven others in a tournament-style knockout vote to decide on the league’s best stop. Three of those eight total saves were excellent saves from Tambakis’ incredible season. Tambakis joins United’ Austin Yearwood in year-end honors. Yearwood won the USL Championship’s Goal of the Season in 2021.
