ALBUQUERQUE, NM (February 14, 2019) New Mexico United announced today the professional soccer team’s latest player signings, under the guidance of Head Coach Troy Lesesne. Midfielder Chris Wehan joins New Mexico United’s roster for its 2019 opening season, kicking off at Isotopes Park on March 9, 2019.
Wehan joins a roster of 14 recently signed New Mexico United players, including three New Mexicans, Devon Sandoval, Justin Schmidt and Josh Suggs, as well as Ben Beaury, David Estrada, Kevaughn Frater, Juan Guzman, Sam Hamilton, Cody Mizell, Santi Moar, Toni Soler, Rashid Tetteh, Ryan Williams and Austin Yearwood. All player signings are pending United Soccer League (USL) and federation approval.
“Chris is a cerebral player who can see passes and dangerous opportunities that other players can't. His ability to create in the final third is special, said Lesesne. “He is someone that truly understands what soccer means to this state and in his third professional season I believe he is primed to have his best year yet for our club.”

Chris Wehan, midfielder, originally from Laguna Niguel, CA, attended and played four seasons of soccer at The University of New Mexico (UNM). At UNM, he was responsible for 31 goals and was named First-Team All-Conference USA, Conference USA Tournament MVP and Consensus National Player of the Week (NSCAA, College Soccer News, Top Drawer Soccer), amongst other academic and athletic honors.
“I am extremely excited to join New Mexico United. The state of New Mexico means so much to me after spending four and a half years at UNM,” said Wehan. “I am anxious to join this group of players, as I know they have been working extremely hard. I feel honored to be joining this historic group of players and staff members that are paving history in New Mexico.”
Wehan most recently played for the San Jose Earthquakes and made multiple short-term loan appearances with Reno 1868 FC. With the Earthquakes, he made 6 appearances and 2 starts. With Reno 1868, he made 14 appearances, 14 starts, 4 goals and 3 assists.
In 2017, playing for Reno 1868 FC, Wehan was named USL Assist Champion, USL First-Team All-League, and USL Rookie of the Year, with 12 assists and 8 goals. In 2014, Wehan played with the Seattle Sounders U23 team, and played with the OC Blues Strikers in 2013.
